The special Intervention squad created by the police Inspector General of Police (IGP)Kayode Egbetokun was meant to combat unexpected uprisings across the country as a result of Banditry, kidnapping, militancy including seccession groupings says ACP Ahmed Alhassan.
Making this assertion in an interview with newsmen at Barcelona Hotel Abuja during the inter-religious affairs fourth quarterly meeting with the theme “Our Natural resources and insecurity in Nigeria”.
Pointed out that security is everybody business that requires the right partnership for co-operation for all hands to be on deck to combat and rid off our society of criminal elements.
ACP Ahmed Alhassan who is the representative of the Inspector General of Police at the Nirec parley stated that Natural resources which breeds insecurity goes together hence the Nirec meeting is apt to ensure that sister security agencies, traditional rulers, religious leaders and individuals work together to maintain peace and order especially in the mining and oil and gas sector prone areas of our Nation
HOME “The creation of the Special Intervention Squad was borne out of a clear and urgent vision: to confront the most formidable challenges that beset our nation today — challenges like kidnapping, banditry, and other violent crimes that have sown discord and fear across various regions of our beloved country.
It would be recalled that the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, inaugurated 169 officers of the newly established Special Intervention Squad (SIS) aimed at tackling kidnapping and banditry across Nigeria.
The ceremony which took place sometime in August 2024 at the Police Mobile Force Training College on Ende Hills in Nasarawa Eggon LGA of Nasarawa State.
Speaking at the event the IGP KAYODE Egbetokun described the SIS as a major advancement in the police force’s operational strategy, incorporating global best practices for effective law enforcement.
He stressed that the unit was designed to address critical gaps in the current policing system by providing a robust mechanism for rapid response and high-impact intervention.
He said, “This occasion marks a significant milestone in our quest for a safer Nigeria. It stands as a testament to our commitment to strengthening national security and protecting every Nigerian citizen.
“The Special Intervention Squad was created to confront pressing challenges such as kidnapping, banditry and other violent crimes that have caused fear and disruption across our nation.”
The IG highlighted the comprehensive training the officers underwent which covered advanced tactical operations, intelligence gathering, crisis negotiation and community engagement
