The Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, University of Abuja, FCT, has inducted over 53 young veterinary doctors into veterinary medicine practice to help enhance the development of the sector.
Prof. Olorunfemi Cornelius Jegede, Dean of the faculty in his address during the 8th Oath-taking and Induction ceremony in Gwagwalada, called on the graduands to be good ambassadors of the profession and adhere to the ethics.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the theme of the Induction is titled :Post Graduation Realities, Opportunities and Challenges of The Young Veterinarian.
Prof. Jegede said that the veterinary medicine practice provides immense employment opportunities that cut across different federal and state government agencies, organizations as well as private practice.
“Today’s Induction as Veterinary Doctors is remarkable that it has imposed on you the challenges of having to stand tall in integrity, impeccable in character, professional in service, alert to global trends and uphold high ethical and professional standards.
“I am charging you on behalf of the Faculty to be worthy ambassadors and as such, always bear in mind that you are an envoy or a representative of the faculty in whichever endeavour you might find yourself in the future.
“The training imparted on you, molded you both in character and learning, I therefore urge you to do your profession and the industry proud, you must also do your industry and your families proud.
“Acquisition of required knowledge and skill need to be followed with diligent application in the workplace, in the course of your business methods, you must have discovered that your career opportunities are not limited to to just the practice alone,” he said.
He maintained that there was need to protect the interests of the young graduates, adding that policies should be enacted as well as collaboration with governmental and non-governmental agencies towards providing employment and other necessities for young Vets either in public or private sectors of the economy.
The Vice-Chancellor, University of Abuja Abdul-Rasheed Na’Allah, on his part, reminded the young Vets never to stop learning and never to forget that veterinary medicine is an art practised by doctors of veterinary medicine.
Na’Allah represented by Prof. Steven Garuba, provost, college of Health Sciences, University of Abuja, expressed hope that the graduates would live up to expectations, praying that they would be good ambassadors of the university by adhering to the ethics of the profession.
NAN also reports that Anyang Annabel Sharon received awards for overall best graduating student in medicine, surgery, microbiology among others while Abayomi Taofeeka Aderola received best graduating student in public health and pharmaceuticology.
Other awardees for training of clinical students and successful donors were; Prof. Olorunfemi Cornelius Jegede, Blueblood organisation, Vet world, African Education Initiative among others. (NAN)
