The National Commission for Refugees, Migrants and Internally Displaced Persons (NCFRMI) has inaugurated an Accelerated Learning Centre for children of IDPs at the Wasa IDPs Camp in Abuja.
Inaugurating the centre on Thursday, Hajiya Imaan Ibrahim, the Federal Commissioner of NCFRMI, said the aim was to enhance the academic capability of the children in the camp.
Ibrahim said this was to also enhance accelerated learning from nursery to year three so that they can read and write, and compete favourably with their age mates.
“However, this system is not only for them to learn the formal education but to also learn some vocational skills. We shall also support their parents.
“We shall replicate this in camps that would be converted to settlement cities and host communities across the country.
“Right now we have about 100 children across four classes; from nursery, class one, two and three and age bracket between three and 10 years,” she said.
The NCFRMI boss said the project was execited in collaboration with some specialists in the education sector, adding that there are arrangements before now and the commission capitalised on that to ensure that the children get formal education.
She added that the curriculum used in the centre is in line with Learning in Emergency of the UN and UNHCR.
Sulaiman explained that the 2021 budget empowered the commission to open up four of such centres and the 2022 budget would empower the commission to open more across the country. (NAN)
