The Oneworld Initiative for Sustainable Development, an NGO, has called on Nigerians to enroll for third-party motor insurance, as it had a lot of benefits attached to it.
Mr Timothy Achanya, President, Oneworld Initiative for Sustainable Development, said this at a road walk organised to raise awareness on the importance having the insurance certificate, in Abuja.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the event was organised in collaboration with Legal Aid Council of Nigeria and other stakeholders.
Achanya said that the low awareness on the third party insurance policy, had continued to make motorists suffer more financial burden due to damages caused by accidents, injuries, among others.
“Over time, people pay for third party insurance certificate without knowing the reason why they pay for it.
“To some, they feel it is for law enforcement agencies allow them ply the roads but it transcend beyond that, that is why we decided to bring this sensitisation to the citizens.
“Like payment for third party liability, payment for bodily injury or deaths and hospital expenses which are the benefits impeded in the third party insurance policy which the citizens are not aware of,” he said.
He however added that it was important for Nigerians to take their third party insurance certificate from genuine insurance company in other not to be scammed.
Mrs Latifat Salau, Director, Oscar Unit, Legal Aid Council, said the sensitisation is to enlighten Nigerians on the need to have a third party insurance, adding that the council was ever ready to assist in that regard.
“A lot of people are not aware of the benefit impeded in third party insurance policy, with this sensitisation campaign, the people will be educated as to what they will benefit.
“For instance, when there is an accident or altercation on the road, you don’t need to engage in physical fight or anything, you just need to come to the Legal Aid Council and we will help you access your claims from the insurance company.
“The only law is that you must have a valid insurance policy, a third party at least.
“A lot of people think that taking the third party insurance is just to avoid issues with police or VIO on the road, but aside that, the insurance company is expected pay your benefits,” she said.
