Rotarian Lawyers Fellowship, an arm of the Rotary International, District 9125 Nigeria, on Friday donated some hygiene kits to victims of accident at the trauma centre of Abuja National Hospital.
The Chairman of the fellowship, Mr James Ugbeda told newsmen that the gesture was to project rotary ideals of humanitarian services, by touching lives positively, as well as offering pro bono legal services where the need be.
Ugbeda said the idea behind the donation was also to put a smile on the faces of indigent patients as part of Rotary International’s areas of focus.
According to him, in the Rotary Calendar, every month has its own theme of what the association usually do, hence the month of June is a fellowship month.
He also said that in Rotary, the month of June entails sharing fellowship and sharing love with one another through humanitarian services.
“As Rotarian Lawyers Fellowship, we deemed it fit to carry an impactful project that will touch lives before the month of June ends.
“We chose the accident victims at the National Hospital, where we distributed hygiene related items to the patients and the wards.
“We also thought of offering free legal services and support to the accident patients.
“We are also concerned if there are insurance issues, in terms of health, we can take up.
“We are also here to give them the little items we brought to assuage their feelings while staying in the hospital.
“We are also reaching out to some of these people in terms of financial donation, especially those of them who are indigent, at least offset their medical treatment,” Ugbeda said.
He assured that the fellowship will look through the proposals to offsetting some of the bills of abandoned patients, who were brought to the hospital with nobody to pay their bills.
He, however, said that the Rotarian Lawyers Fellowship would not be able to offset all the bills, but would do its best within the limit of its resources.
Receiving the group at the Male trauma centre of the hospital, Mrs Elizabeth Olusesi, a Matron, appreciated the visit and the items given to the wards and the patients.
She prayed that Almighty God would continue to multiply the pocket where the donations had come from.
Mrs Hadiza Garba, a Matron at the Female and Children trauma centre and Onyaiah Nkechi, a Matron at the female trauma centre, also appreciated the donation to the patients in their wards.
They both pleaded on behalf of some of the patients whose conditions are critical and could not afford their medical bills.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that items donated includes toothbrushes, toothpastes, Dettol antiseptic liquid, Dettol soaps, Sanitary pads and hand sanitizers.
Others are tissue papers, cotton wools, Genting violet paints (GV) iodine, Methylated spirits, plasters, bandages, surgical hand gloves, face masks and syringes. (NAN)
