Gov. Babagana Zulum of Borno says that lack of commitment to good governance by leaders and followers is part of the serious corruption affecting Nigeria.
Zulum made the observation in his address at the just concluded 10th Annual Sir Ahmadu Bello Memorial Lecture in Maiduguri.
Zulum who dwelt on the negative impact of corruption said that with corruption the nation would never get it right in its quest to catch up with other contemporary nations like Singapore.
He noted that fighting corruption is a collective responsibility of leaders and followers who need to abide by rules and regulations of doing things.
“One of the major problems in Nigeria is lack of obedience to rules and regulations; let’s ensure rules and regulations laid down are followed.
“During Sardauna there was obedience to rules and regulations; we will never get it right until we follow the rules and regulations,” Zulum said.
He noted however that Nigerians still have hope if they renewed commitment in line with the theme of lecture ” Creating Pathways for Peace: Tackling Banditry and Insurgency through Good Governance for Sustainable Development in Nigeria”.
Zulum said the commitment of his administration to good governance by focusing on security and vital projects in various sectors, including fulfilling campaign promises has strengthened the resilience of the citizenry.
“Security situations in Borno has improved by 95 per cent and by the grace of God before the end of my administration Borno will be rid of the insurgency.
“These developments demonstrated our achievements through good governance and understanding of our multifaceted approach to curbed banditry and insurgency,” Zulum said.
According to reports, the highlight of the event attended by some northern governors is the presentation of Lifetime Achievement Awards to deserving personalities and handing over of the symbolic flag to Bauchi State as the next host.
