The Nigeria Union of Journalists, (NUJ) Special Delegates Conference session sitting in Kano , Thursday passed a new law to supervise the activities of Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN).
The Special Conference holding at Afficient event centre in Kano presided over by the national president of the union, Chris Isiguzo.
In amending article 9 of the NUJ constitution, it was resolved and included that in states that SWAN election is not supervised by NUJ henceforth is null and void.
Future, there is a provision for a new clause inserted that states that the National President of SWAN would now be addressed as National Chairman.
However, the session vehemently objected to the proposed draft law that proposed that SWAN should now occupy the status of Beat Association.
Our checks reveal that there might be a legal tussle in the offing.
According to sources, the resolution passed by the NUJ Special Session in Kano on SWAN is considered an infringement on the verdict of courts of competent jurisdictions passed on the issue.
Further, keen observers opined that NUJ had formally written to CAC recommending that the marriage between it and SWAN be dissolved, that action by NUJ paved way for SWAN to be registered as a professional body.
“I ponder how NUJ that approved to part ways with SWAN by giving them a letter to go and register with CAC has suddenly turned back and now laying claims to SWAN been its affiliate.
“SWAN is now a professional body and NUJ is a trade union, they have no business together going by the present positions in the provisions of the law .” an observer stated.
