The International Association of World Peace Advocates (IAWPA) says it’s partnering the Center for Ethical Rebirth Among Nigerian Youths (CERANY) an NGO, to tackle the menace of drug abuse, illicit trafficking in the country.
Mr Nwokoma Messiah, Head of Programme and Development of IAWPA, said this in a statement on Saturday in Abuja.
He said the partnership had become imperative given the high rate of youth involvement of youth in drug abuse on the country.
Messiah said that the organisations have outlined series of activities to commemorate the 2023 United Nations Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, marked on June 26.
“The observance of this day, which is sequel to resolution 42/112 of Dec. 7, 1987 of the UN is imperative considering the high rate of abuse of drugs and other illicit activities by Nigerian youths.
“The event is important to help curtail the rising abuse of drugs and also teach our youths various ways they can cope with pressures as well as the dangers inherent in the consumption and abuse of drugs.
“The event will feature a special workshop to be attended by people from all works of life, especially students, youth groups, rehabilitation centres, and various volunteers involved in fighting the drug scourge.
“Our association has been involved in various projects that promote peace in the country and we see the high rate of abuse of drugs by our youths as inimical to our pursuit of peace.
“We currently belong to the UN Global Compact and also enjoy a special consultative status under the UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOSC) since 2019, and membership cut across various groups and backgrounds.
“Consequently, we will be conferring our Eminent Peace Ambassador Award and appointment on CERANY President, Mr Chuks Akamadu at the event,” Messiah said. (NAN)
