The Director of Operations, Lincoln College of Science, Management and Technology, Abuja, Mr Olusegun Suleiman, has called on President Bola Tinubu to appoint those who know how to address challenges in the education sector.
Suleiman was speaking on the sideline of an education fair of the college in Abuja on Saturday.
He also said that there was need to review the curriculum in tertiary institutions in order to meet global best practices.
”The new administration of President Bola Tinubu, what he need to do as per education, I think he should look Into the leadership of education, starting from the Minister down to the least person of in the educational department of Nigeria.
”They (government) should actually put people that have the skill, that have been in that department for long, that have the experience in that position so that they will be more effective in that department (sector), that is one.
”Two, again in my opinion, I think government should look into our curriculum, the curriculum we are running now is actually outdated.
”I think they should have a complete review or overhaul of that curriculum and give us a curriculum that suits the situation currently in the world.
”So that when we have that, the educational sector in Nigeria can have an improvement and we can as well compete with other university around the world,” he said.
On the educational funfair, Suleiman said that the Lincoln University had been in operation in Malaysia, but replicating same in Nigeria so as to give opportunities to Nigerians to have quality education as obtained around the world.
”We have two campuses currently- we have Lincoln College of Sciences, Management and Technology in Kurudu, Abuja. In this, we have our accreditation under the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE) and Federal Ministry of Education.
”In this place we have programmes that at the end of the day students will be given a diploma certificates. We have Computer Software Engineering on 80 per cent practical, and we actually stand on that because that is our strength.
”We want to make sure our students after graduation, become self-relevant instead of looking for jobs, so they are going to create employment for people around Nigeria,” he added.
He, therefore, said that the institution has the National Universities Commission’s accreditation to operate with its second campus at the Nasarawa State University, Keffi.
Also, Mrs Pearl Ezeigwe, from the Student Affairs Department of the college said the institution also provides self-reliance skills for basic survival of the students.
”Lincoln is not all about the certificate, we have skills to give out to the students, to make them CEO, we are establishing young entrepreneurs, we are establishing leaders that will take the vision out there.
”We are also bringing out humanity from our students, we are taking it into the world. It is not all about the certificate like I said, our curriculum is not bulky, that is 80 per cent practical and 20 per cent theory in Lincoln here,” she said.
Gaius Jedediah, a Mass Communication student of the school said that the institution had impacted his life through the practical rudiments of his course.
According to him, “I now know how to handle the camera because I don’t have to get to my final year before I know how to do some of those things.
” For me, I would say Lincoln has really impacted a lot in my life because, you know we deal with 80 per cent practical and 20 per cent theory.
”And so, for the practical, you come in to class everyday, you don’t get to just read about what they are teaching you, it’s not that in lecture they are just using words to explain things to you, you get to watch them.
”Like for me now, a mass communication student, I get to hold the camera, I get to use my system to edit news and do other things right from my year one-my first week in school, I started practicals I don’t need to wait for my final year to start touching the camera,” he said.
