Stakeholders in the education sector have called on parents to promote cultural values and language among children in the country.
They made this known at the cultural day ceremony organised by the SASCON International School on Saturday in Abuja.
The event which was organised to commemorate this year’s Children’s Day had the students appearing in their various native attires, while different cultural dishes were on display.
Mrs Godiya Hassan, the Principal of the school, said that the event was organised to help the children understand and appreciate the rich cultural heritage in the country.
“This has always been our way of celebrating the children every children’s day but this year, we want them to understand the rich heritage we have in Nigeria.
“We want the children to appreciate where they come from and know that our country is blessed with diversed cultures and to appreciate their mother-tongue.
“We also want to call on the incoming administration to enhance the curricula used in this country so that our children are global citizens and are able to fit into any society they find themselves,” she said.
Mr Isaac Emeka, Eze Igbo of Kantampe Community in the FCT, lauded the school for organising the cultural day, as it would help in ensuring that cultural values do not go into extinction.
“This type of event will make them know where they are coming from, because it is important for us to inculcate our culture into the younger generations.
“This is a commendable programme and it should be replicated by other schools too, we should not allow our culture to die,” he said.
Also speaking, Mrs Adesola Badmus, a teacher at the school, added that the children had been exposed to the various foods by different tribes, their attires, norms and how to respect other people’s culture.
She also called on parents to create time for their children as bonding with them would make them feel loved and special.
Ms Treasure Joe-King, Clerk of the house, FCT Children’s Parliament and a student of the school, called on the government to create a platform for children to air their views on the situation of the country.
She also called on the government to help reduce the number of out-of-school children in the country.
Another student, Master Prince Nwokoye, said the event had made him to appreciate other people’s culture, adding that he would continue to pray for the peace and unity of the country.(NAN)
