Belgium has reaffirmed support for Morocco’s autonomy plan for the Sahara under the Kingdom’s sovereignty, saying the plan is “the most serious, credible and realistic basis” for achieving a just and lasting political solution to the Sahara regional dispute.
Morocco’s foreign ministry said in statement on Monday that the Belgian position was expressed by the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, European Affairs, and Foreign Trade of the Kingdom of Belgium, Mr. Maxime Prévot, following his meeting in Rabat with the Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccan Expatriates, MFA Nasser Bourita.
According to the statement, the Belgian official said his country’s position on the Sahara is consistent with the stance expressed in the Joint Declaration signed in Brussels on October 23, 2025, and acknowledges the existential importance of the region for the Kingdom of Morocco, firmly placing the Sahara region within the framework of Morocco’s sovereignty and national unity.
“The Belgian Foreign Minister also stressed that he intends to act accordingly on diplomatic and economic levels,and that Belgium’s position aligns with international law.
“He reiterated the announcement that the Belgian Ambassador in Rabat will soon be invited to visit the Sahara region to prepare and support several economic initiatives, such as visits by Belgian companies and the organization of trade fairs by the three regional agencies,” the statement said.
It added that “Regarding the extension of consular coverage for Belgian nationals residing in the Sahara and for Belgians traveling in the region, Belgium reiterated that its Consulate General in Rabat is competent for the entire Kingdom of Morocco without regional distinction, including the Sahara region.”
The statement further said that “Prévot’s visit reflects the positive momentum in relations between the Kingdom of Morocco and the Kingdom of Belgium, marked by regular political dialogue and a shared desire to deepen a strategic partnership based on mutual respect and convergence of views on matters of common interest.”
The ministry said Rabat and Brussels have also expressed readiness to advance strategic partnership based on strong political dialogue, economic cooperation and close consultation on regional and international issues of common interests.
They pledged to encourage investment and partnerships in high value-added sectors, including the energy transition, sustainable infrastructure, green economy and industrial innovation.
The Belgium position is coming after European countries, including Finland, have already shown strong support to the Moroccanness of the Sahara and the autonomy plan proposed by Morocco.
This development is part of the international momentum generated by His Majesty King Mohammed VI in favour of the Moroccanness of the Sahara and in support of the autonomy initiative, which culminated in the adoption of Resolution 2797 by the UN Security Council on October 31, 2025.
The European Union officially adopted a unified position supporting Morocco’s autonomy plan for the Sahara at the 15th EU-Morocco Association Council session recently held in Brussels.
The 27 EU-member states agreed that genuine autonomy could be among the most feasible solutions” for the final resolution of the regional dispute.
