A socio-political organisation, Southwest Integrity Watch ( SIW) has observed with dismay, killings by unknown gunmen currently on the rise in Oyo State, especially in Ibadan, the state’s capital.

The group in a statement issued by its coordinator, Comrade Lade Akinyemi, in Ibadan over the weekend, said it was high time the security agencies upped their game.

It also stated that the state’s governor, Mr. Seyi Makinde, should help boost community policing by equipping the Southwest Security Corps, widely known as Amotekun, and then release incentives for intelligence gathering.

Specifically, the SIW raked up recent dastardly acts of killings by unknown gunmen, citing the case of a popular vehicle spare-parts dealer gunned down by unknown gunmen at Bodija Market in Ibadan, who are still to be traced.

The organisation cited instances, saying for example, “middle-aged man, whose identity remains unknown, was shot and killed by gunmen on Monday afternoon in Ibadan, Oyo State.

“The tragic incident occurred around 3 p.m. at Anfani Junction along Ring Road.

“Eyewitnesses reported that the assailants, riding motorcycles, trailed the victim to the location before opening fire.

The group added: “People heard gunshots. He was shot twice. At first, they thought it was a tire burst, but then they saw the young man lying in a pool of his blood.

“He was shot in the abdomen. They didn’t take his phone, but they took something from him that was likely to be money. We suspected that he must have been coming from a bank.”

The group further lamented similar cases of unknown gunmen killing targets were recently recorded in neighbouring communities to Ibadan such as Iseyin and Iwo and Ikire in Osun State, tasking appropriate authorities to wade in.
