The Oyo State chapter of the Muslim Media Watch Group (MMWG) has denounced the misuse of social‑media platforms by some Islamic scholars, describing the practice as “preposterous, condemnable, unacceptable and a betrayal of public trust.”

In a press release signed by State Coordinator, Alhaj Mas’ud Akintola and Secretary Ustadh Abdullah Adewumi, the group said the scholars often resort to public insults and “washing their dirty linen in public” when faced with criticism.

The Group noted that the Scholars seem to be shrouded in the mirage of their popularity to wash their dirty linen in the public when confronted with unfavourable situations instead of remembering the Quranic injuction which states that “believers are brothers to one another,therefore make peace among yourselves “.

It cited the Qur’anic injunction that “believers are brothers to one another, therefore make peace among yourselves,” urging the clerics to uphold the principle of brotherhood.

The MMWG warned that the use of “unprintable names” could lead to legal action and erode the goodwill and integrity expected of religious leaders. “Scholars should be role models for the righteous,” the statement added.

The group called on the League of Imams and Alfas, as well as the Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs, to intervene quickly to stop the trend.
