The United Nations has hailed the Defence and Police Officers’ Wives Association (DEPOWA) for its role in advancing women empowerment, skills acquisition and community resilience in Nigeria.

The UN Deputy Secretary-General, Ms Amina Mohammed, gave the commendation when she visited the DEPOWA Secretariat in Abuja, during the just concluded African Chiefs of Defence Summit.

This is contained in a statement by the association on Thursday in Abuja.

In her remarks, Mohammed said DEPOWA’s initiatives, particularly through its Skill Acquisition Centre, had created opportunities for women to contribute meaningfully to their families and communities.

During a tour of the centre, the UN Deputy Secretary-General interacted with trainees in tailoring, catering, ICT, and other trades, praising the centre as a model for empowerment and social stability.

“This centre is a powerful tool for uplifting families and strengthening the fabric of society.

“What DEPOWA is doing aligns with the Sustainable Development Goals of inclusivity, empowerment and progress,” she said.

In her remarks, the President of DEPOWA, Mrs Oghogho Musa, described the visit as a moment of “deep alignment” with the UN.

Musa added that DEPOWA’s vision resonates with global aspirations for empowerment, inclusion and sustainable impact.

She reaffirmed the association’s commitment to expanding programmes that uplift women, enhance family well-being, and position women as catalysts for positive change in society.

The visit underscored a shared resolve between DEPOWA and the UN to promote inclusion, build resilience, and deepen collaboration for sustainable development. (NAN)
