The Defence and Police Officers Wives Association (DEPOWA) on Monday launched its nationwide “Thank You Troops” campaign in Borno State, with Gov. Babagana Zulum pledging stronger support for families of fallen heroes and wounded soldiers.

The DEPOWA President, Mrs Oghogho Gwabin Musa, who led a delegation to Government House, Maiduguri, said the campaign was designed to honour the sacrifices of frontline troops, care for the wounded-in-action, and assist widows, orphans, and vulnerable families in barracks communities.

“I must begin by commending Your Excellency for your unwavering and practical support to the Armed Forces and security agencies in the fight against insurgency, a fight that has cost so much yet remains critical to our nation’s survival,” she said.

She noted that Zulum’s scholarship schemes, empowerment initiatives, and welfare programmes for widows and orphans stood out as “shining examples of compassionate leadership in action.”

Explaining the choice of Borno for the campaign’s flag-off, Musa said, “Borno is the heart of the fight against insurgency, and the resilience of its people is an inspiration to the nation.

This, according to her, is where the sacrifice is most felt, and it is only fitting that we begin here.

Responding, Gov. Zulum pledged to be a “champion” of the cause, promising continuous partnership with DEPOWA to uplift military families.

“My doors are always open to partner with you to support the wounded-in-action, widows, and orphans of deceased military personnel, to give them a sense of belonging,” he assured.

The governor recalled the harsh conditions faced by troops in volatile communities before resettlement efforts began and reiterated his administration’s commitment to returning more displaced persons to their ancestral homes.

He also called for policies that allow soldiers to periodically reunite with their families, saying such measures would “boost morale and strengthen the resolve of our troops.”

Zulum lauded the Chief of Defence Staff, service chiefs, the Theatre Commander, and troops for their gallantry, resilience, and dedication to restoring peace in the Northeast.
