Mr Olugbile Holloway, the Director General, National Commission for Museums and Monuments ( NCMM) says museums play a critical role in preserving indigenous knowledge systems, promote inter-cultural dialogue and national unity.
Holloway stated this during the Grand Finale of the 2025 International Museum Day on Wednesday in Jos.
It would be reported that the event was organised by the NCMM in collaboration with the Eggon Cultural and Development Association (ECDA).
NAN also reports that the event had the theme, “The Future of Museums in a Rapidly Changing Communities”.
Holloway, represented by Anna Adamu, the Director Institute of Archaeology and Museums Studies, Jos, described museums as structures that preserve people’s cultural heritage.
He added that with Nigeria’s rich and diverse cultures, museums play a critical role in preserving indigenous cultural values and traditions.
” They are living institutions and spaces for learning, dialogue and cultural continuity.
” They reflect our past, engage with our present and help us shape our future.
” In a rapidly changing communities, museums serve as anchors of identity, offering context and understanding in times of uncertainty,” he said
The director general congratulated Eggon people for showcasing their culture during this year’s international museum day.
Speaking, Sen. Joshua Dariye, former Governor of Plateau and Chairman of the Occasion, said that NCMM had over the years provided platforms for Nigerians to showcase their cultures.
Dariye, represented by Mr Sunday Garba, also congratulated Eggon people for hosting the event.
He, however, called on all ethnic groups in Nigeria to promote peace and unity in the using their cultures.
On her part, Hajiya Imaan Suleiman – Ibrahim, Minister of Women Affairs , who is the Chairlady of the Grand Finale congratulated Eggon nation for show casing their culture to the world.
The minister, represented by Mohammed Ayitogo, Chairman, Nasarawa South All Progressives Congress ( APC) called for the promotion of culture for the nation’s unity and development.
On their Parts, Justice Ahmed Ubangari Alaku, ( Rtd) Aren Eggon, Mr Iliya Aliyu, the Chairman of Nassarawa Eggon LGA and Mr David Abuluya, the President, Eggon Cultural and Development Association ( ECDA) said that the occasion was organized in order to showcase Eggon’s rich cultural heritage.
They underscored the importance of culture in promoting unity and peace in the society.
They appreciated all dignitaries for attending the event and wished them safe journey to their various distinctions
Earlier, Mr Linus Kingi, the Curator, National Museum Jos, urged Nigerians to embrace their culture at all times.
He assured of collaborating with Eggon nation towards actualizing their intensions of having a museum on their culture and history.
” Scheduled for the palace of Aren Eggon as soon as they would want it ,” he said.
It would also be reported that the event featured cultural dance by different cultural groups, among other activities.
